Hi,

I've made my own version of this before, as I used to enjoy it when I was an omnivore. If you re-hydrate the soy chunks in a broth of yeast flakes, they're super-tasty. You can reserve the broth to water it down later if you so desire, but I don't think they do that traditionally. Anyway, if I ever get around to writing out a recipe and posting it, I'll drop you a link. I'm making this tonight with tofu instead.

cheers!

Mihl, I used to have a Hungarian pen pal when I was a small kid, and one summer my family visited my pen pal's family in Hungary. I have such nice memories from that trip, and I remember liking Hungarian food a lot, even though I was really picky when I was a kid. I guess that's where my liking to Hungarian food comes from...

VeganCowGirl, I think faux meats go really well with Hungarian-style stews, because of their rich, strong taste. Probably that's why faux meats go so well with chili too.

Eric, I completely forgot that you posted that goulash recipe a few weeks back! Maybe that's where I got the sudden urge to make some pörkölt from. Our recipes are rather similar too. Hmm, I gotta try your goulash the next time I crave something Hungarian-style.

This looks excellent. I just made a goulash a few weeks ago, and this is a perfect follow-up to that dish. Thanks for sharing :)

ohhhh soy chunks. I always feel that I buy these and never use them...except for chili. What a great look stew - really pretty and very hardy looking.

This remembers me of my Hungarian guest family. The mother made a vegetarian version of this dish for me so I could try the Hungarian specialities without meat. I never asked her about the recipe, so thank you a lot.
