Originally, name day was a Christian celebration of the saints, and if you were named after a saint, you  held a celebration on a day dedicated to that saint.

In Finland, it isn't a religious institution any more, and new names are added in the calendar every year. There are certain names printed in the calendar for each day of the year, and when it's your given name's day, you can feel special!

Finnish children get small presents for their name day once a year, but most adults don't even celebrate their names, and there are usually no big parties like at birthdays.
